Do you usually wake up with a sore jaw or extreme headache that causes a lot of discomfort? If yes, then you might be grinding or clenching your teeth during sleeping at night. This is a very common problem and is called bruxism in technical terms. Many people don’t even know they do it in their sleep.
The good news? A simple solution exists - it’s called a night guard.
When you grind or clench, the night guard takes the pressure — not your teeth.
Here are some common reasons why people wear night guards:
Constant grinding can make teeth flat or chipped. A night guard prevents this damage.
Clenching puts pressure on the jaw muscles. A night guard helps them relax.
When your teeth and jaw are relaxed, you sleep more comfortably.
Here are a few signs that show you may need a night guard for teeth:
If you have one or more of these signs, talk to your dentist. A night guard may help you feel much better.
There are three main kinds of night guards. Let’s keep it simple:
This type is great for someone who doesn’t grind too much or has just started.
A bruxism night guard is usually hard because it needs to handle strong pressure.
These work well if you need both support and comfort.
If you have jaw joint pain or tightness, you may need a special night guard for TMJ (Temporomandibular Joint). These are made to reduce pressure on the jaw joint.
TMJ guards are usually custom-made to fit according to your mouth. They help the jaw muscles to relax completely, thus reducing pain.
You can find night guards in pharmacies or online. These are called "boil-and-bite" guards. You boil them, then bite into them to shape it around your teeth.
Dentists also make custom night guards just for your mouth. These are more accurate and last longer.
Here’s a simple comparison:
| Feature | Store-Bought Night Guard | Custom Night Guard |
|---|---|---|
| Fit | Average | Perfect |
| Comfort | May feel bulky | Very comfortable |
| Durability | Wears out faster | Lasts longer |
| Price | Cheaper | Costs more |
| Protection | Basic | Strong |
If you grind heavily or have jaw pain, go for a custom night guard for teeth or a night guard for TMJ. It's worth it.
Taking care of your night guard is easy. Just follow these tips:
No, wearing a night guard does not cause discomfort. A night guard for teeth is made to relax your teeth, not to cause any discomfort. Initially, wearing a night guard might feel new or uneasy, but most people get used to it after some time.
In most of the cases, people are supposed to wear their night guard every night. If you stop, the grinding may come back.
Some people need it only during stressful periods. For others, it’s a long-term need - especially for TMJ issues. Your dentist will consistently guide you based on your requirement.
Grinding your teeth or dealing with jaw pain can be uncomfortable. But you don’t have to suffer quietly.
A night guard for teeth is a simple, small tool that can make a big difference. Whether you need a bruxism night guard or a night guard for TMJ, it can protect your teeth, reduce your pain, and help you sleep better.
If you think you might need one, talk to your dentist. It’s better to act early than to deal with damaged teeth later.
